At a recent event, CPL One’s finance director Laura Papworth-Saunders shared a personal choice of top tips from her career.
Last month, I was pleased to be invited by Pure Resourcing Solutions to speak at its latest Finance Leadership Programme event.
The session brought together a group of finance professionals keen to share experiences, learn from one another, and strengthen their leadership skills.
The event was split into two parts: the first, an engaging and practical session on conflict resolution; and the second – my contribution – titled ‘ Tales from the top’. During my session, I took delegates through my career story so far – the twists, turns and lessons learned along the way.
Here are my top five takeaways:
1. Traditional paths aren’t the only way
Be open to opportunities. Sometimes, the most rewarding opportunities come when you’re open to exploring the unexpected. Keep learning and researching, especially if you’re early in your career, as life can get busier as you get older!
2. Build your networks
Connections matter. Use LinkedIn to connect and engage, attend networking events, and don’t underestimate the value of coaching or mentoring. Strong relationships – with your boss, your team and your peers – can make all the difference.
3. Details matter… most of the time
In accountancy, attention to detail is vital – but not in every situation. When you’re looking at the big picture, focus on trends and insights rather than getting lost in the weeds. Sometimes a quick ‘back of the envelope’ calculation can give you the same answer as hours of detailed analysis.
4. Communicate, communicate, communicate
Communication is one of the most important skills any leader can develop. Keep notes on what you need to discuss with others, hold regular one-to-ones, and make sure you’re updating your teams even when it might feel like there’s nothing new to say. Connection breeds motivation and trust.
5. Don’t be afraid of what you don’t know
None of us knows everything. Ask for help from advisers, colleagues and friends. Imposter syndrome can hold you back – but remember, confidence grows through curiosity and openness.
That sense of communal curiosity and opportunity to network were in evidence at the finance leadership event – the day was full of lively discussion, and rich in learning. It’s that kind of energy and engagement that can really keep a career moving forward.
