This summer’s hottest topics

Positive outlooks to take the heat off a world in flux.

It may be holiday season and, for many, a seemingly neverending heatwave, but the global pressures we (and our clients and their audiences) are facing won’t allow us to simply pack up and head for the beach. The heat is on – and it’s staying on.

A sense of heightened pressure, and the need to respond and adapt to a fast-changing world, surfaced repeatedly throughout our big summer event, The Common Room.

Conversation turned from the overlapping shocks of climate crisis and political upheaval to the swings and shifts of customer habits and expectation, as well as the way AI is accelerating into position in all our lives.

How do we respond to these challenges as businesses and as humans? That was the question we asked our panellists on the day. The response came in the form of hope – and some excitement about what we’ve learned from our changed circumstances, and how we can put that knowledge to good use.

We heard that, in times of crisis, the way we interact with people takes on greater significance; that there is an opportunity and desire to build stronger connections with our audiences, and that leading through a crisis can deliver real, positive, systemic change.

We heard that, as costs spiral and resources are limited, a return to foundational principles can provide direction, helping you to reassert your core values, create relevant and compelling products for your audiences, and focus on the mutually beneficial power of loyalty.

As the topic turned to artificial intelligence, we heard about the need for transparency in how we employ it, how we must ensure quality of work and protect brand safety through retaining a human filter, and how we must continue to respect the strong foundations of good journalism and the ethics of copyright.

These hot topics will outlast this heatwave of a summer. As our director of business development, Lucy Oakshott, commented on the day: “Challenges make opportunities and we’re excited to be looking to the future and finding solutions.”

But don’t take our word for it; watch the videos to see what our panellists said in The Common Room and get in touch to continue the conversation.
